RAVENNA, A HERITAGE OF BYZANTINE ART
Ravenna is famous throughout the world for its mosaics. The colours, shapes and light of the small glass tiles kept in the monuments still today bear witness to an ancient heritage of mosaics from the 5th and 4th centuries.
Ravenna was the major political and cultural center of the West in the centuries that accompanied the decline of the Roman world; it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, capital of the Gothic kingdom and of the Byzantine power in Italy.
The magnificence of that period left in Ravenna the mosaics of Galla Placidia and the Neoniano Baptistery, the mosaics of the Theodoric era of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, in the Arian Baptistery; the Byzantine mosaics, rich in gold decorations, of San Vitale and Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
The beauty of the mosaics, but not only: the archaeological discoveries of the Domus of the Stone Carpets and the Domus of the Triclinium, the guided tours, the concerts...
But every city or small center in the province of Ravenna is rich in valuable architecture and works of art from every era and style, from Faenza, city of ceramics, to Casola Valsenio; from Cervia to Milano Marittima, from Lugo to Forlì; from Bagnacavallo to Brisighella.
Museums, exhibitions, village festivals that revolve around popular traditions and typical products offer a thousand opportunities for interest and entertainment throughout the year.
THE BEACH OF CERVIA
The coast is fully equipped, the beach establishments stretch along the entire coast and offer all kinds of services. The sea has a sandy bottom that slopes gently and makes it ideal for walking and swimming in complete safety, even with children.
THE SALINES OF CERVIA
The whole history of Cervia is linked to salt.
It is only from this point of view that we can also understand the approach of the Cervia Salina Park Society, which looks to the future, and the urgency that the whole country has in giving the Salina and therefore Cervia itself a practical dimension life.
Between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, the State Monopoly, which dealt with salt pans throughout the national territory during the twentieth century, decided to dispose of part of its assets. Among these there were also the Saline di Cervia.
And here the history of Cervia takes on an important connotation. The Cervia community, in fact, rallied around its salt pans, felt by all as an identity value.
If for the State Monopoly the small Cervia salt pan (small compared to the immense Sicilian and Apulian salt pans, where, among other things, salt is collected several times a year, thanks to climatic conditions different from those of northern Italy) it was considered "uneconomic", for the citizens of Cervia on the contrary it was essential that the production of salt did not stop completely, to avoid the swamping of the territory. In this, having attributed to the salt pan a landscape value and the function of an ecosystem to be kept unaltered has been justified. In fact, the most precious asset of a community is, together with its history, its landscape.
The Salina di Cervia is the smallest and most northerly in Italy, it extends for 827 hectares, in a natural park, today the southern gateway to the Po Delta Regional Park and has always been a natural population and nesting reserve for many animal and plant species.
The Cervia salt pan, the southern gateway to the Po Delta Regional Park and the northernmost salt pan in Italy, is known throughout our peninsula and in the world for the production of its sweet salt, called white gold in ancient times!
